The Google employee who wrote that manifesto got fired

Antifar 2 hours ago#1
https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2017/08/07/engineer-behind-google-anti-diversity-memo-reportedly-fired/547348001/

he Google engineer who wrote an anti-diversity manifesto that has roiled the company and Silicon Valley has been fired, according to reports.

Recode and Bloomberg both reported Monday night that the as-yet unnamed author has left the company.

Google declined to confirm the firing.

The essay by the male engineer began to circulate within the company last week. Titled "Google's Ideological Echo Chamber," it suggests the company encourage "ideological" rather than gender diversity and contends that women don't make up 50% of the company's tech and leadership positions because of differences in their preferences and abilities, not sexism.

Fallout from the memo has been so severe that Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who had been traveling in Europe and Africa, cut short his family vacation and told employees he would be back for a town hall meeting Tuesday in order to discuss the incident that's caused an uproar at the company.

"This has been a very difficult few days," a company-wide memo sent out by Pichai on Monday evening began.

The company strongly supports the right of staff to express themselves “and much of what was in that memo is fair to debate, regardless of whether a vast majority of Googlers disagree with it,” Pichai wrote in his memo..

However, portions of the engineer's manifesto violate the company’s code of conduct, crossing the line by advancing harmful gender stereotypes, Pichai said.

“To suggest a group of our colleagues have traits that make them less biologically suited to that work is offensive and not OK. It is contrary to our basic values and our Code of Conduct,” he said.

The manifesto had been circulated within Google last week but only became known to a larger audience on Friday when those within the company began to tweet about it.

On Saturday the full text of the essay had been published online by the tech site Gizmodo. By early Sunday, it had gone viral.

On Monday, Motherboard, which broke the news about the manifesto, published it in full, including what it said was an addition by the author:

"Despite what the public response seems to have been, I've gotten many personal messages from fellow Googlers expressing their gratitude for bringing up these very important issues which they agree with but would never have the courage to say or defend because of our shaming culture and the possibility of being fired. This needs to change."

My take:
1. don't go writing manifestos that more or less accuse your coworkers of being unqualified token hires, and especially don't circulate it among colleagues.
2. In general, employees should have unions and collectively-bargained contracts that protect them from being fired on the whims of higher-ups and over dust-ups like this. If you want workers to feel free to express their viewpoints, worker power is the only way to accomplish that. Would that have saved this guy's job? Impossible to say.

It's only a free speech issue if the author were arrested and charged with social heresy or something. That's not happening here, at least for another three or four years.

Why does anyone need to know his name or identity? He's presumably not a public figure and the manifesto was anonymous right? So he'd either need to go public himself or someone else would leak out his name for some reason. The article does say 'as-yet' so I wonder if they think either of these will happen soon.

That was a pretty tame read. But if you like your job don't write a paper criticizing your company and give it unwanted media attention. It's basically the kaepernick effect.

It'd be nice if there was more of a push to get women interested in CS/EE in high school and college instead of the media blasting tech companies for not having a gender balance when the pool of talent they hire from is like 80/20 male.

Engineers collaborate, at least higher level ones do. Collaboration, especially with people who are not engineers requires a level of empathy and the ability to deal with people. You need to get everyone on the same page and get them doing the same thing, not getting 10 different solutions from 10 different engineers. Making it work? Tons of engineers can do that.

Reasons why a lot of engineers supplement their expertise with other disciplines, so they don't end up just being the low-mid level technical guy who can't climb.

He shouldn't be a bigot. A privileged one at that.

I don't think you know what s bigot is. If anything, the people calling for his termination are the bigots.

It's almost like attempting to silence people who you disagree with typically ends up badly for you!

I doubt this guy is gonna get a cent from Google outside of his employment.

He'll get a bunch of exposure and donations from conservatives about how much of a victim he is and how bad Google towards guys like him though. Maybe he'll write a book.

Well he said he wanted a de-emphasis on empathy in engineering. There was no way to take it other than "some of my female and minority colleagues wouldn't be here if google didn't give them a break".

No, that means the engineer's job is to make it work. The "empathy" bits should have been settled long before the engineers were ever brought in.

    https://phys.org/news/2015-11-empathy-faculty.html
An engineer who asks "should this even be done?" won't be an engineer for very long, outside of Star Wars spinoffs.

Engineers also have to obey a code of ethics. They are obligated to society and blow the the whistle on wrong doings.
