It's disappointing Bernie wouldn't vote for it. Raises some of the same concerns people had about him potentially becoming president.

Why exactly are we placing sanctions on Russia?

Idk. It may have something to do with alleged interference with US election. Idk.

Because, they actively interfered in our election. Whether or not they actually succeeded in their goal or actually had an effect is up in the air, but the fact remains that they attempted.

On the contrary, it's good that he voted not to undermine the Iran Deal, the premier foreign policy accomplishment of the Obama administration

It's because Bernie was promised a full pardon for his wife if the sanctions didn't pass!

i dont really see why it's a protest vote against the bill torpedoing obama's iran deal i'm more surprised senate dems didn't fight harder to have the iran sanctions cut

Yeah... Iran should have never been lumped in with these sanctions. Should have been another bill entirely.

Should have been another bill entirely.
...should not be a thing at all. Iran is no longer developing nuclear weapons, why does Trump want them to start back up again?

He's got a good point about the Iran sanctions, but idk After finding out Stein was also compromised by Russia, if Sanders was too then somehow Clinton and Johnson were better JFC 2016 was so s***

My point was it should have been a separate discussion. Lumping it in with the Russian sanctions (which were guaranteed to go through) was a low move.

There shouldn't be a discussion on whether or not Iran should have nuclear weapons.

How long do sanctions last anyways? Or is it dependant on Russia song something to remove it?

The deal put in place by Obama is clear on that. They have abided by the terms of that deal. These sanctions threaten to undermine the US's end of the bargain.

I think that's his point. If we violate it, then they have no reason to hold up their end.

What's that supposed to mean? They are already starting to develop them, we have to discuss it sooner or later

I love how Iran followed their end of the deal but we are placing sanctions on them. I just saw the tweeter was Hillary person. More Hillary people attacking Sanders. Sanders tried to save something Obama worked hard on while everyone else said ok throw it away.

Iran has made themselves an ally of Russia and Bashar al-Assad since Obama's nuclear deal went into effect. They've propped up Syria's bloody regime by direct intervention, and by proxy via Hezbollah, and in so doing, helped murder tens of thousands of people, while keeping the rest enslaved to a dictator. I'm not sure that should be overlooked.

I don't know exactly what's in the bill so i won't criticize too much but stuff like this does concern me that he (Bernie) isn't capable of protecting the country.

Sanctions are tricky. A lot of Russians suffer a great deal, and that level of poverty and misery can very well feed populist governments and hostile attitudes towards the west. Which could help keep Putin in power.

Sanctions can also hit the illusion of Putin's indomitable power. If he is able to hack other countries' elections and get away scott free without repercussion, the oligarchs and other power centers in Russia will be more likely to obey them, for they realize they stand to gain without suffering any consequences. When their assets are frozen and their industries sanctioned, they realize there are repercussions, and become less loyal to Putin.

Senile Sanders with another useless gesture.

Bernie and Rand Paul are the two best Senators by far, so I'm guessing this is a bad bill.

I doubt oligarchs are very loyal to Putin as it is. Don't be mistaken - I'm not saying that Russia's actions should go without repercussion, I'm just making the point that it's really complicated and sanctions might not be so good from every perspective. One of those perspectives is that the Russian people, a lot of them, are starving. Things are really tough with oil prices and sanctions etc.

They are loyal because they fear him, look at what happened to Khordokovsky. Therefore that loyalty has to be undermined by fear of external sanctions, which hits their self-interest. Putin is a strongman. All strongmen have to appear strong, otherwise they will be overthrown. Sanctions make Putin appear less strong, less in control.
