Seems like an actual smart man wouldn't need distractions in the first place, might actually have gotten the ball rolling on a single policy initiative he's proposed, and wouldn't have hired a team that have resigned or had to be fired within 6 months. On the other hand, the media can spend like a full news day dissecting one tweet, so maybe he's doing stuff that isn't getting reported. But nah, I think he's just actually dumb as s***. |

He's a lot smarter than people give him credit for.
He knows how to rile people up and has made himself not only president but the most talked about man across the globe for 2 years straight And during this entire time he has done over a dozen idiotic dangerous things but nothing has stuck because he has made people go crazy over nothing every few days so it is all just white noise. He's smart, he understands the masses and ultimately how little they matter once you turn them on themselves.

I think it's important to define what you mean by smart/stupid before you can really debate it.
If you asked me if someone was smart, I wouldn't usually look at how successful someone was. Sometimes that can be an indicator, but there are plenty of people who are very successful without being smart, because they bring some other talent to the table. In Trump's case, he's probably as smart as the average American. He doesn't seem like he would perform well on any standard metric of intelligence (granted, some of that has to do with his age). As far as his political intelligence is concerned, while he may have the people skills to tap into the fears of the middle class enough to become President, those same skills have not translated well to the actual presidency. It would be one thing if each of these distractions were helping him cover up for bad bills that were being passed or something, but instead the distractions are getting in the way of his policies. I can't remember who said this, but it seems like things like the transgender military incident and everything with the Mooch are distractions, but not as traps set for the media but rather Trump getting distracted. |

He's failed at everything he's done. He even managed to become president while losing the popular vote. He's never done anything to make me thing he's even of average intelligence.

I'll be honest, I feel that critics of Trump are saying the same things as before he was elected and I still haven't heard any real valid points to the president being racist, homophobic, etc. I was on the fence in the election and still on the fence with the president right now but I feel that people throwing out buzzwords and insults without substantiating anything makes me less inclined to believe the president is stupid, homophobe, etc.

Simply we've never seen anyone as rough as him we are used to smooth talking slimy politicians that tell you whatever you need to hear to get elected. You're misinterpreting that. It wasn't some big plan of Trump's. His treatment of Sessions pissed off a lot of his fanbase, and Trump started to see what would happen, so he backpedaled.
