- A Google employee wrote an anti-diversity manifesto thats going viral
The document has been widely condemned by company employees

A senior software engineer at Google has written a document titled “Google’s Ideological Echo Chamber,” which calls for the company to replace its diversity initiatives with ones that promote “ideological diversity,” according to a report from Motherboard. I mean, this is pretty much the point of diversity. There is no benefit of having people of different races and genders if they all share the same exact ideology. Its author argues that the gender gaps at Google are the result of biological differences between men and women, and that the company shouldn’t offer programs that help under-represented groups The Harvard studies examining the wage gap myth came to this same conclusion. I haven't read the entire manifesto, but I don't see any issue with this. It seems like the kind of thing regressive liberals naturally hate because it's another instance where reality doesn't support their narrative.

It's confusing to me what people against the idea of ideological differences between genders are concerned with. Men and women do think differently. It's both the result of the culture AND biological differences. We live on different instincts, and physically there are far too many differences to suggest that the two gender's minds could possibly act identical given the same upbringing. Without actual specifics to the article though, it's a bit unclear the true purpose of the article and key points.

like this passage. Note, I’m not saying that all men differ from women in the following ways or that these differences are “just.” I’m simply stating that the distribution of preferences and abilities of men and women differ in part due to biological causes and that these differences may explain why we don’t see equal representation of women in tech and leadership. Many of these differences are small and there’s significant overlap between men and women, so you can’t say anything about an individual given these population level distributions |

Without actual specifics to the article though, it's a bit unclear the true purpose of the article and key points. a lot of reasons. but you should know the basis of there thinking first. there is a long standing idea that humans are a blank slate(tabula rasa). John Locke, Rousseau.. its something deeply ingrained within the social sciences. This isn't stuff that is new by any means btw, Steven Pinker has a book about it in the early 2000's and making the case against it. well if you think that humans are blank slate(and this isn't just argued mentally but also physically, that our gentials are the only difference), well then what do you attribute the difference of outcomes in society to? only society, so the society must be changed so that there is equality of outcome. they also have a nice little trick to handwave criticism of contrary evidence that goes like this. All evidence society generates is inherently biased. And this bias is in favor of reinforcing the ideas currently held by society. |
I read it. It sounds reasonable. Here's the most damning part for Google:
"I strongly believe in gender and racial diversity, and I think we should strive for more. However, to achieve a more equal gender and race representation, Google has created several discriminatory practices: Programs, mentoring, and classes only for people with a certain gender or race [5] A high priority queue and special treatment for “diversity” candidates Hiring practices which can effectively lower the bar for “diversity” candidates by decreasing the false negative rate Reconsidering any set of people if it’s not “diverse” enough, but not showing that same scrutiny in the reverse direction (clear confirmation bias) Setting org level OKRs for increased representation which can incentivize illegal discrimination [6]" That's f***ed up and good for him for writing the memo.

I can't find the actual memo :/
Really interested As a white guy working in tech, there is basically no room for discourse on this sort of thing in the industry Which is a tragedy because I think no one is really "anti-diversity" so much as skeptical of the methods used to achieve diversity And maybe/probably everything google is doing is the best/right way to do it But since no one can ask questions without being vilified, discontent festers into 10 page manifestos

Not everything was right, but it was a reasonable document which was met ironically, but not surprisingly, by the echo chamber mentioned in the prelude. I also didn't read everything so he may have degenerated into some bulls*** by some point, I actually stopped around the time he started talking about sex differences which surely will be a contentious point.
Most of what was written before hand was accurate though.

should women be paid less because 'they are biologically inferior to men'

should women be paid less because 'they are biologically inferior to men' Nope, and they're not. The difference in salary after controlling for similar job and education is almost entirely explained by family decisions -- women taking more time off for maternity leave, wanting to work flex time after giving birth, etc. In fact, if you compare professional childless men and women in their late 30s to early 40s, the wage gap not only disappears, it reverses itself.

You can find the whole memo here Thanks for the link The guy definitely has a couple thinly veiled r/redpill ideas in there, but you have to give him credit for presenting his ideas in a non-inflammatory way I think it's wild that so many articles label this as "anti diversity" though He's presented his view on what effective diversity should mean, and suggests that there is a deficit of critical conversation on the subject The backlash just helps to prove his point

I like how nowhere in the article is there a real refutation to the "manifesto"
Just a bunch of people salty that anyone would make a fact-based argument against their worldview.
refuting the manifesto would give it legitimacy that it doesn't deserve

i cant get myself to have the energy to care about these faux rage moments
person did a thing, some people are mad. i should care why? does this person have any power? no?
And when the hourglass has run out, eternity asks you about only one thing: whether you have lived in despair or not.The Google employee is right and everyone else and including the snowflakes in the first post are idiots.
The manifesto said NOTHING about men being superior to women or more intelligent women. They're projecting their sexism at the author.
Why does the Nursing industry have more women? Why does construction have more men? Because different interests. But feminist minds are too puny to understand that.

eh i think that's more to do with priorities than interests or brain chemistry
men gravitate towards jobs that offer high financial reward relative to training requirement because we need money to have power in society. women gain little power from wealth and generally don't prioritize it in their career paths the way we do

so you see more men in careers with lots of risk but a high reward:training ratio
There are a lot of reasons, power, status, money. And it's still considered an interested if someone is interested in power and status. I'm not disagreeing with you, as there are many reasons why men get paid more in certain fields.

oh s*** dude got fired!
“Part of building an open, inclusive environment means fostering a culture in which those with alternative views, including different political views, feel safe sharing their opinions. But that discourse needs to work alongside the principles of equal employment found in our Code of Conduct, policies, and anti-discrimination laws.”
So much for their 'inclusive environment'. Every time this happens, it pushes moderate Democrats further to the right.
The leftist echo chamber only want to hear what is 'socially acceptable', instead of the truth.
