Ivanka Trump's sweatshops

  3. Ivanka Trump's sweatshops

The reality of working in a factory making clothes for Ivanka Trump’s label has been laid bare, with employees speaking of being paid so little they cannot live with their children, anti-union intimidation and women being offered a bonus if they don’t take time off while menstruating.

The Guardian has spoken to more than a dozen workers at the fashion label’s factory in Subang, Indonesia, where employees describe being paid one of the lowest minimum wages in Asia and there are claims of impossibly high production targets and sporadically compensated overtime.

The workers’ complaints come only a week after labour activists investigating possible abuses at a Chinese factory that makes Ivanka Trump shoes disappeared into police custody.

The activists’ group claimed they had uncovered a host of violations at the plant including salaries below China’s legal minimum wage, managers verbally abusing workers and “violations of women’s rights”.

In the Indonesian factory some of the complaints are similar, although the wages paid to employees in Subang are much lower.

Here we look at life inside the factory through interviews with workers, all who have asked for their details to be changed to avoid losing their jobs.

I dont care. Not only should Ivanka be far more irrelevant (her relevance is Trump's fault), but this is also irrelevant because I dont care about sweat shop wages. If the country wants higher wages, raise the minimum wage. If the workers dont like the work, dont work there.

Although yes, this certainly goes against Trump's whole buy America deal lol.

As a show of good faith Trump should start by bringing back every factory and factory job he and his family have sent overseas. If he does that maybe I'll entertain the idea that he's serious.

And no, because this shitty defense always inevitably comes up, just because there were other companies who did the same or because "everyone else was doing it" does not excuse him doing it.

There are plenty of American companies who didn't move their factories overseas to exploit Asian labor and instead opted to keep Americans employed. The choice was always there.

To be fair, Republicans have generally held this position far before Trump existed. The fact that you think this is special to Trump shows how badly the November loss warped your mind.

Well, I would also wager that a lot of Dems dont mind sweat shops and low wages as well - Clinton certainly was a fan of NAFTA.

Im not "excusing" Ivanka's company because its not the burden of American companies to pay higher than the minimum wage (whether domestically or abroad). I think her company, and every other company, is perfectly justified in paying the lowest wages possible. However, I do think Trump should create incentives for job creation/retention at home, whether through less regulations and/or punitive measures.

Yeah, maybe we'll get lucky and his family constantly being exposed for the low life pieces of shit they are makes him realize that being a scummy human being is kind of a terrible thing to be.

Let me amend that to say I also dont really care if American companies pay below the minimum wage in foreign nations; foreign nations are supposed to worry about them, not US agencies. If they are found guilty of wrongdoing, then they should be punished.

Essentially there is too much bad shit going on in the US for me to care about what happens outside this country except as the issues pertain to American interests.

Sweat shops are immoral and should not be allowed in a well regulated market, but I find it amusing that you of all people would have the balls to come in here and post something like that when your neoliberal God Hillary is one of the biggest defenders of corporations that get away with the use of this type of labor. Do I have to remind you of Hillary's donors and their extensive list of abuses?

Big reason why I can't stand you neoliberal scum, you are such frauds, who pretend to care about workers while removing regulations and promoting exactly this type of behavior in the marketplace. Disgusting.

So their profits soar, and then what? They give it up voluntarily because it's good for society? The thing that the taxes were already meant to keep upkeep on? Where does that missing revenue for the government then come from? Cause corporations have made it ABUNDANTLY clear over the last decade that they will not part from their profits once they have made and projected them.

It comes from your average person who will get taxed into the dirt, where eventually they will have little choice but to work in such a place. Yeah, "less regulations and hope the businesses do the right thing" works on paper. So does communism. Neither works in the real world.
