If it's a stupid question then you should have a pretty simple answer. If you were publicly making an ass of yourself and saying horrible things in front of your place of business, even if you were not on the clock, would you expect to still have a job there?

Well, here's the thing, teachers are a bit different in that they're meant to directly influence our kids. Would you want a teacher who's said on social media that statutory rape shouldn't be a thing or that ISIS have the right idea but are a bit too harsh to teach your kids?

If you still believe this, despite all of the evidence, then it sounds like you'll be the next to get fired. If you're a professor/teacher you're a public figure. Generally you're using social media to engage with your students and the school (especially if you're using your name on a Twitter account). Any comment you make on a Twitter account also represents your profession.
It really isn't rocket science.

This isn't about a political disagreement. He said in a public statement on his Twitter account that victims of a natural disaster deserved it. A Twitter account that is likely used to promote his career and the university he works at.
