Hurricane Harvey is Cat. 2 and expected to get stronger.

From the National Weather Service Hurricane Center:

Preparations along the Texas coast for Hurricane Harvey should be rushed to completion this morning. Conditions will deteriorate through the day as this dangerous and life-threatening approaches. Harvey is centered at 7 a.m. CDT about 140 miles (225 km) southeast of Corpus Christi. On the forecast track, Harvey will make landfall on the middle Texas coast tonight or early Saturday. Harvey is then likely to meander near or just inland of the middle Texas coast through the weekend. Maximum sustained winds are near 110 mph (175 km/h) with higher gusts - strong Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some additional strengthening is possible, and Harvey is expected to become a major hurricane before it reaches the middle Texas coast with winds up to 120 mph and higher gusts.

A Storm Surge Warning continues from Port Mansfield to High Island Texas and a Storm Surge Watch from south of Port Mansfield Texas to the Mouth of the Rio Grande. A Hurricane Warning continues from Port Mansfield to Sargent and a Tropical Storm Warning from north of Sargent to High Island and from south of Port Mansfield Texas to the Mouth of the Rio Grande. A Hurricane Watch continues from south of Port Mansfield Texas to the Mouth of the Rio Grande and a Tropical Storm Watch continues from south of the Mouth of the Rio Grande to Boca de Catan, Mexico. Hurricane conditions are likely within the hurricane warning area later today and tonight, with tropical storm conditions expected to first reach the coast in the hurricane warning area later this morning.

Harvey is expected to be a major hurricane at landfall, bringing life-threatening storm surge, rainfall, and wind hazards to portions of the Texas coast. Preparations to protect life and property should be completed this morning.

Predicting a Hurricane a day or week in advance is a whole lot different than trying to predict a hurricane 10 years from now. Climate =/= weather. Lrn2science

Far right Texans: "**** FEMA! Obama is building secret FEMA camps to round up Christian patriots and install Sharia law! What's that? A storm in NY? Pay for it yourself! Don't use my tax dollars to fix your cities! Ugh!"

It seems this wouldn't be a big deal if there wasn't a chance the storm could stall over Texas for days after landfall.

Torrential tropical rain for days could devastate the area it's stuck over.
Sometimes it's what you don't do that makes you who you are.

I was under the impression he was talking about humans in that post, not politicians.

If you believe an entire state deserves to suffer because of politicians, then I suggest you go to the most liberal place you can find and sign yourself up to be repeatedly beaten with blunt objects for the travesty that is the Trump presidency.

Because every liberal with a boner right now over the hurricane, by their very own logic should probably be repeatedly punching themselves in the balls for electing Trump.

You'd condemn a state that votes 50.1% republican, all the people in it, for the actions of a small number of republican politicians.

Let's not make fun of the hurricane situation.

I will point out that the right, ESPECIALLY evangelicals make fun of the situation when natural disasters hit liberal states, and then they say it must be "God's wrath" because those states are nice to LGBT, minorities, etc.

Texas has been incredibly backwards, racist and bigoted, it is basically an evangelical's utopia. So why is this happening then? Checkmate.

Hopefully this will teach them to leave God out of their petty earthly politics

Like, 3,877,868 people, in Texas, voted Hillary Clinton.

Trump got 52.2% of the vote in Texas.

Yeah see, I can't actually remember many people saying it, except crazy preachers/charlatans saying it, and while politicians on the right flock to them for support, I'd be surprised if many of them actually believe the crazier things the preachers say, and they probably never parrot those specific views, and you'd need to be pretty far off the deep end of religious fanaticism to actually believe god is mad about gay people and sending natural disasters over it.

It's just not, let's say, a talking point given much time of day.

That's the trouble with the GOP: they're both evil, and powered by evil.

Posting from Houston so should mostly getting rain, not full blunt. Though I have heard 15 inches so maybe another Allison, have to wait and see.

I do however have to ask, what does climate change and predicting a path of a hurricane have to do with each other? Climate change states that the planet is warming up, so we should be seeing more super hurricanes forming as the ocean heats up. The currents and winds to my knowledge shouldn't change with that, which is part of weather prediction, a art that can be used to predict how climate might change, but overall is taking the best estimated guess for a storms path. If I'm missing something let me know, I'm curious and would like to hear where I might be wrong. As of now, this just a hurricane like Ike and Alicia, its strong, it's going to suck when it hits, but isn't anything out of the ordinary.

As for FEMA reaction, I do want to see how Trump handled it. Though, based on my expierence from Ike and Allison, we get a little help, but we seem to handle it mostly internal. (Again if you have different view from out of state, share, I want to hear what you saw for these two storms that caused massive damage. Events in Alicia would be nice as well, but I only have history context on that one).
why did you waste your time looking down here? you just wasted more of your short life by doing so.

Latest I've heard is 53 inches of rain and that it is starting 12 hours earlier than was expected. If it hooks back around, this could be the most devastating hurricane in our lifetimes.

I live 250+miles inland in DFW so this won't affect me (less than an inch over a week) but I'm pretty upset about this happening and I'll be really f***ing angry and definitely hold a grudge if Trump f***s up the FEMA effort. If he pulls a Bush with the relief effort I would cast a vote for Mitt f***ing Romney if it meant getting Trump out of office.

Sadly, this would not surprise me, but I would -expect- a sitting President to have more tact and knowledge of disaster relief SOP than that.

It's more of a case of believing some forms of science over the other because it disagrees with you.

It's the equivalent of believing your car starts and is powered by the engine, but the only reason it moves down the highway is because invisible horses are pulling it.

Sounding like many people are staying behind and going to try weathering the storm. Considering that emergency response from the government might not be possible for up to a week, expect to hear a ton of horror stories over the coming days. This is going to be horrible, I don't understand why people think they can just stay home and everything will turn out okay in this instance.

Instinct. Cavemen would think "the safest bet is to stay in our cave". Then cave became castle, then castle became home.
