There's a few studies showing that people who start off trolling and sarcastically espousing extreme beliefs are very susceptible to actually believing those things later on. Many people in the "actual white supremacist" category (like weev) started off as trolls. Mere exposure effect or something.
And other studies at least hint that the more you troll, the less empathetic you become, and the harder it is to stop, damaging real life relationships and limiting achievements in life. See: that episode of south park for a semi-serious example. Don't get mad at trolls, they're hurting themselves more than they're hurting you. |
